Koryo Tours & Studio’s director Nick Bonner was invited to the Association of Asian Studies in Seattle 2024 annual conference. He and a group of academics were invited to discuss various topics on Pyongyang’s Revolutionary Art Scenes.

Nick’s presentation was entitled ‘Cutting into Pyongyang: Woodcut and Linocut Representations of the City and Its Society’.

Woodcut and Linocut Representations of the City and Its Society

The presentation covered artistic depictions of various aspects of the city and how the art is used as soft propaganda.

One of the other participants was Jinyoung A Jin who was discussing the work of the artist Lee Quede. He defected to North Korea after the Korean War.

His artwork was prohibited in South Korea and only reinstated in 1988.

He is now recognised as one of the peninsula’s most famous modernist artists.

It is an incredible story.

Look out for Jinyoung A Jin’s upcoming book on this artist.
