Pyongyang Film Studio

The North Korean Film Studio was established in 1947 and lays the foundation for the North Korean film poster. It built permanent sets to shoot pro-revolutionary films that were very much against the Japanese colonization of the country and the US presence in South Korea. Now, they are currently renovating the Pyongyang Film Studio.

Over the years, artists from the Pyongyang Film Studio were instructed to paint advertisements and hoardings to make the sets look realistic and to create a North Korean view of foreign street scenes.

The posters North Korean artists dreamt up as ‘imperialist advertising’ and previously used to make the streets more authentic are being removed.

Café | Film Poster

While Westerners tend to think of cafes as places for coffee and quick sandwiches, this venue has higher aspirations: to become Paradise!

This North Korean film poster is unique. Her eyes are closed, her lips are parted, and her head is thrown back in if not ecstasy, then in anticipation. And that’s not coffee in her glass.

Clearly, she has never worked in the fields, mined for coal, or thought of anything but her own selfish bourgeoise desires.

In the film Order 027, set during the Korean War, viewers can distinguish between the northern and southern military women because the latter are to be seen painting their nails or heading off to the beauty parlour.

This is a clear indication of what the DPRK sees as a value gap.
