We commission original work which make sure the provenance of the art is guaranteed. We provide the necessary paperwork to identify the piece as well as documentation of the project.
Koryo Studio is the first and the largest Western art gallery to commission and sell work by artists in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). We also hold a world class collection of DPRK art from the 1950’s up to the present day which is available for public exhibitions and academic study.
The commissions give the artist the opportunity to experiment outside the socialist realism genre of art as dictated by the state. Our artists are ‘pushing the boundaries’ and will go on to be world recognise artists should the country allow more individual freedoms. In terms of art you should buy because you love the piece but we also do believe artworks will increase in value. Any of our early commissions have been resold with a sharp increase in value and it is therefore an opportunity to purchase a piece of art at a very reasonable price.
We work with North Korea art studios for official commissions (such as the Asia Pacific Triennial) but we also work directly with North Korean art managers who look directly after artists. This allows us to give a percentage of the money direct to our artists.
Koryo Studio has been working with numerous artists in North Korea since the mid 1990’s on various projects and we visit the studios most months. We have known many of the great artists from to Hwang in Jae and Chae Chang Ho have worked with them on large commissions. However, their work is expensive and to keep our art affordable we therefore also work with up and coming artists who show particular talent. On occasion we work with young artists who due to the sensitivities surrounding the work (mainly because it is out of the state controlled socialist realism genre) prefer not to use their name, the work in this case being produced by Koryo Studio with Nicholas Bonner who endorses the artwork.
