The North Korean Film Studio was established in 1947. It built permanent sets to shoot pro-revolutionary films that were very much against the Japanese colonization of the country and the US presence in South Korea. Now, they are currently renovating the Pyongyang Film Studio.
Over the years, artists from the Pyongyang Film Studio were instructed to paint advertisements and hoardings to make the sets look realistic and to create a North Korean view of foreign street scenes.
The posters North Korean artists dreamt up as ‘imperialist advertising’ and previously used to make the streets more authentic are being removed.
Lactogen; An advert for the Nestle infant formula ‘Lactogen’.
Part of this text is likely a spelling mistake (pre) pared in Australia. However, as Western characters are likely unrecognizable to the film audience just the Romanised style of lettering is sufficient to create the feeling of otherness.
We have looked for labels of ‘Lactogen’ for that era (South Korean street post-Korean War) but have not found anything which has three children sitting on the tin. So, it is possibly an example of a North Korean artist showing an advertising talent.
The attached label in Chinese characters says the product is of the highest scientific standard.
