Winter Fishing Battle!
Due to the favourable marine geographical conditions in the East Sea of Korea (Koreans from the north and south would scream if you called it the West Sea of Japan!), there are more than 90 kinds of fish swimming around (but not for long if this fisherman has his way). This includes the walleye pollack and sardine, mackerel, hard-finned sandfish, and anchovy.
North Hamgyong Province is relatively close to the North Pacific Ocean, one of the world’s three major fishing grounds, very favourable conditions for deep-sea fishing.
From a North Korean text: The aquatic industry has a more solid material and technological foundation. It introduced scientific fishing methods, and vigorously carried out aquaculture and fish processing in the ocean to develop aquatic product production.
It is increasing in an epoch-making manner.
Not often you hear of ‘an epoch-making manner’ , I must try it sometime.
Korean Translation:
조선동해의 유리한 해양지리학적 조건으로 하여 함경북도 앞바다에는 90여 종의 물고기가 살고 있으며 그 가운데서 산업적 의의가 큰 명태, 정어리, 고등어, 도루메기, 멸치, 공치, 송어, 낙지, 청어, 방어를 비롯한 회유성 물고기들과 가재미, 이면수, 우레기, 열기, 물개미 등 정착성 물고기들이 살고 있다.
함경북도는 세계 3대 어장의 하나인 북태평양과 가깝게 잇닿아 있으므로 먼바다 물고기잡이에서도 유리한 조건을 가지고 있다.
수산 부문에서는 수산업의 물질기술적 토대가 더욱 튼튼히 꾸려지고 과학적인 어로방법이 도입되였으며 바다가 양식과 물고기 가공사업을 대대적으로 벌려 수산물 생산을 획기적으로 늘이고있다.
