The North Korean Film Studio was established in 1947. It built permanent sets to shoot pro-revolutionary films that were very much against the Japanese colonization of the country and the US presence in South Korea. Now, they are currently renovating the Pyongyang Film Studio.
Over the years, artists from the Pyongyang Film Studio were instructed to paint advertisements and hoardings to make the sets look realistic and to create a North Korean view of foreign street scenes.
The posters North Korean artists dreamt up as ‘imperialist advertising’ and previously used to make the streets more authentic are being removed.
Unlike propaganda posters, this artist’s Western figures of ‘Oasis’ are surprisingly attractive.
It is lacking the American beaky nose and long lupine nails, and we can assume they are of European extraction. Still, these are cardboard cut-outs representing a decadent society, of no value or substance to anyone – even themselves.
Again this is a stark difference between DPRK values and how they see the rest of the world.
Whilst North Korea does not use the Hollywood ‘all persons fictitious’ disclaimer stating that the persons portrayed in the film are not based on real people, the artwork does have a striking resemblance to coffee time with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump…
