THE LINOCUT

The brief we gave Kim Kwang Nam was to imagine the arrival of man on a new planet as one of the steps to finding other life. We asked him to develop a theme that portrays the emotion of space travel.

I had read books as a youth about the exploration of space and how man would slowly advance using space stations deeper into out of space. I depicted the spacemen’s feeling of triumph and wonderment at their view of the galaxy contrasting with the dead planet. At the same time I used the antenna equipment in the left corner and the shadows to create the isolation amongst the vastness of outer-space. The colouring of the piece, is not like a sky we know, I wanted to create something surprising to make up the wonders of the unexplored.
