The North Korean Propaganda Poster
Propaganda is produced throughout North Korea at various studios around the country. Most famously, in the form of the propaganda posters. Due to interest and demand from visitors who travelled with us via Koryo Tours, we produced hand-painted copies of existing posters. Koryo Studio commissioned these because of their aesthetics or their interesting and often idiosyncratic content – not because of any agreement with the content, sentiment, or political message.
The propaganda posters were produced prior to 2015. There is no connection whatsoever between these works or the artists with any sanctioned entity. As the original artist is recorded only on official records (or on the print run details), we list the artist as ‘not recorded’ and emboss the giclée scans with the Koryo Studio seal for authenticity. The edition for each propaganda poster is numbered in pencil.
Propaganda Poster Prints
The following are propaganda poster prints.
We do not see these works as ‘fine art’, but rather as graphics which will appeal to those interested in North Korea and the propaganda art form itself. It was a difficult project to commission because of restrictions from the DPRK side, and then later all production ceased because of UN Sanctions. Due to this, the pieces now have a certain rarity about them.
Please understand that they are copy works produced by North Korean artists. They should be treated as pieces for display rather than as investments, unlike our other fine-art pieces.
Propaganda Poster Originals
We have a number of hand-painted pieces for sale.
Since 1993, we have worked with North Korean artists on various projects which we hope allow them to express themselves in a more nuanced way than the limits imposed on them by their DPRK studio. Where possible, we work directly and in a private capacity with the artist.
